   political figure, prime minister Born into a Protestant Socialist family in Meudon, near Paris, Lionel Jospin was the son of a teacher and a midwife. in 1961, he entered the Ecole nationale d'administration and, upon finishing in 1965, entered the Foreign Ministry. A member of the socialist Party since 1971, Jospin was named the party's first secretary in 1981 by President François Mitterrand. From 1988 to 1992, he served as minister of education. in 1995, Jospin ran unsuccessfully against jacques chirac for president of the republic. Then, in March 1996, he again assumed leadership of the socialist Party. After the parliamentary elections of April 1997, in which the Socialists had a huge success, Chirac asked Jospin to form a new government. As prime minister, Jospin (who retired from politics in 2002) pursued policies of economic reform and expansion of the European union's monetary union.
